ESC 1000 – Introduction to Earth Science

General Education Credit: Physical Sciences
College Credit: 3

About The Course

The Earth comprises four components: the solid earth, the hydrosphere (water), the atmosphere, and the biosphere (life forms). We will explore many of the fundamental processes that occur in each of these components and the interactions between them.

Course Goals

This course is designed to provide you with a basic understanding of how the Earth works and how geological processes affect people. Most basic concepts of geology will be explained during the lectures. Beyond background material, much of the course content will be based on student interests; i.e., potential lecture topics of general interest will be voted on by the class. The goal is to provide you with an understanding of the basic principles of how the earth works, how natural processes affect you, and the uncertainties involved in scientific decisions.
